Who we are

Understanding the systems. Elevating the stories. Building more equitable communities.

THE FOUNDING CONCEPT

Urban Atlas Collective was founded from a growing realization that the stories shaping our communities are often embedded directly within the built environment itself. The city speaks through vacant homes, school closures, environmental hazards, transportation corridors, and patterns of disinvestment — conditions that are not isolated, but connected spatial realities influencing how people live, move, learn, and experience opportunity.

What began as an academic and personal exploration evolved into a broader mission: creating a platform that not only analyzes urban conditions, but also documents lived experience, elevates community narratives, and uses a geographic lens to make visible the systems shaping everyday life across cities and communities.

That exploration emerged from witnessing how inequality is often embedded into the physical landscape itself — through school closures, housing instability, environmental hazards, disinvestment, and the uneven distribution of resources across neighborhoods. Over time, the work became less about studying cities from a distance and more about understanding how people experience policy, space, and institutional decisions in their daily lives.

OUR APPROACH

Urban Atlas Collective sits at the intersection of infrastructure, space, policy, and power, communicating these complex relationships through spatial analysis, visual storytelling, documentary research, and landscape assessment using community-engaged inquiry.

The work combines GIS mapping, photography, historical analysis, and public narratives to better understand how structural inequities become embedded within neighborhoods over time.

Urban Atlas Collective approaches urban research through both analytical and human-centered lenses. Every map, photograph, and project seeks to reveal relationships between infrastructure, environmental exposure, education, housing, public investment, and community vulnerability — while also identifying resilience, memory, and possibility within the landscape itself.

OUR TEAM

FRANK LUCAS

Founder & Principal Research Consultant

Frank Lucas is the founder of Urban Atlas Collective, where he leads work at the intersection of spatial analysis, policy, and visual narratives. His research focuses on how structural systems shape neighborhoods and opportunity, using mapping, fieldwork, and community engagement to translate data into meaningful insight and impact.

CRYSTAL LUCAS

Outreach & Partnerships Coordinator

Crystal Lucas strengthens the connection between Urban Atlas Collective and the communities it serves. With a people-centered approach, she leads outreach and communication efforts that build meaningful relationships across people, place, and research.
